Apple is significantly increasing its investment in artificial intelligence, dedicating $1 billion per year to AI development. This effort appears to be in response to perceptions that Apple has fallen behind competitors like Google and Microsoft in AI technology.
The new AI push is being led by three top Apple executives. John Giannandrea heads the team developing the underlying AI systems and improving Siri. Craig Federighi leads engineering focused on integrating AI into iOS and apps like Siri and Messaging. Eddy Cue oversees efforts to add AI capabilities across Apple's apps and services.
While Apple already uses AI in products, its applications have been limited compared to AI assistants like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. Apple's own chatbot, Ajax, is not yet publicly available. The new funding aims to advance Apple's AI offerings and close the perceived gap with other tech giants.
