Hours after OpenAI announced the departure of CEO and co-founder Sam Altman, fellow co-founder Greg Brockman also announced he is leaving the AI research company. Brockman shared the news on X, saying "based on today's news, i quit."
Earlier Friday, OpenAI's board unexpectedly fired Altman, saying it "no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI." The company named CTO Mira Murati as interim CEO. When Altman's departure was announced, OpenAI said Brockman would step down as chairman but remain at the company. Just hours later, Brockman shared his resignation. He told OpenAI employees he is "super proud" of their work over the past 8 years but is quitting following the news about Altman. Brockman and Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2016 with the mission of developing artificial general intelligence to benefit humanity.
The research lab has recently made waves with ChatGPT, an AI chatbot that kickstarted strong interest in AI. The leadership changes come at a pivotal time for OpenAI, as it looks to commercialize its research and balance openness with profitability. Brockman's exit underscores the rapid shakeup at the top of the influential AI lab.
